Installations
The exhibit was installed in New York City, NY, USA, at the River Project from August 19, 2014 to September 22, 2014 and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum from October 9, 2014 to January 19, 2015.
At the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, the exhibit was part of the “More Than Meets the ‘I’” showcase. Hundreds of visitors had the opportunity to interact with the robotic fish exhibit during its installment.
The exhibit features a robotic fish is remotely operated by an iDevice application. The exhibit includes educational posters on the topic robotics, fish physiology, and marine pollution. The robotic fish is propelled by a three degree-of-freedom multi-linked tail actuated by servomotors. The exhibit affords visitors the control of the robotic fish with an iDevice application. After a brief tutorial, visitors can utilize one of three different control modes in the application, which enable a user to directly maneuver the robotic fish, create a trajectory to guide the robotic fish through real-time visual feedback, or allow its onboard infrared sensors to autonomously guide the robotic fish. These modes are named manual, semi-autonomous, and autonomous mode, respectively. Visitors are free to switch between control modes of their choosing throughout the interaction.
